Canon background: wiki
crau: Alfred was in hadriel for about a year or so. There he formed quite a few connections with people from the modern world and learned quite a bit about technology. He had a lot of interpersonal and relationship growths with several characters that caused a lot of questions for him about his marriage back home. He'd chosen to leave Hadriel and go with Ivar to a different world or some sort but here he is instead.
OC world information: n/a

Abilities: Alfred is a good fighter with sword and shield. He is capable on horseback. His true strengths lie with his intellect. He is shown to beat or nearly beat Ivar (who is known to be quite a genius tactician) at a chess-like game when Alfred is quite young. Outside of games, he has shown to have a good mind for tactics and strategies of battle and is forward-thinking.

Strengths:

Alfred is soft spoken and thoughtful. However, the fact that he is soft spoken does not mean that he is not opinionated or afraid to speak his mind, especially one on one. When he journeys to Lindisfarne monastery to try and learn more about his father, he isn't provided with much insight. The monk he speaks to unknowingly insinuates that his father, Athelstan, was an apostate and had embraced the pagan way of life. Alfred says that perhaps it had been God's will. The monk says that is unlikely. Alfred is defiant and continues by stating that, it being unlikely doesn't mean it's not true. He goes on to explain his world view which, is very indicative of the type of person he is. He believes that there is more good and evil in everyone and that the world is not a simple black and white place. He tells the monk that he should put that into one of his sermons. In a sentiment that at the time is nearly heretical, he then also says that they should stop conducting all their business in Latin. He says that the people of England do not understand Latin and it makes them think them superior. Alfred takes that moment to call out the monk on his hypocrisy, stating that he says they are humble and only care to glorify God. He explains that God can be glorified in English, that the people should be able to share in it and in the knowledge of all the books in the monastery's library.

This is one of the most informative showings of Alfred's character and motivations. He is able to maintain a respectful tone, cleverly wording his chastisement in ways that could not be argued against easily. It also shows what kind of King he will become. There's a deep sense of compassion and care for the people of England and not seeing them as mere subjects or pawns. He wants to see his people thrive in all ways. Another example of this is when Ragnar and Ivar come to Wessex. They are considered enemies and Ivar is a cripple. Alfred treats Ivar with respect and doesn't show him any different treatment because he's a cripple. He plays a game with him and it's clear that Ivar in the very least respects Alfred to an extent. Alfred gives him a game piece when they're called apart. With Ragnar, Alfred was kind when they first met. The second time they meet Ragnar gives him Athelstan's cross. Alfred hugs him and tells him that he will never forget him. Ragnar is considered an enemy of England and is being taken to his death and Alfred's actions were kind in such a time.

Weaknesses:
While, Alfred often is quite mouthy in speaking his opinion in small settings he has been shown to be quite shy. He does not seem to feel comfortable in front of crowds. He seems more at ease when in a small group or one on one and there he is confident. He has hesitance to speak to Aethelwulf of his ideas of what they need to do to defeat the Vikings in the long term. He sees that they need to build a Navy. His mother encourages him to speak to Aethelwulf but Alfred points out that he is occupied training his half-brother Aethelred to be a great warrior King. He reminds his mother that Aethelwulf is not actually his father.

Alfred is often quite passive/passive-aggressive. He doesn't speak up at times when it is needed and important, though he often runs his mouth at seemingly inappropriate ones. He is passive-aggressive when he's pushed to assert his ideas to people and will subtly snipe at the person doing so.

Alfred is arguably far too trusting for the position he holds. Even now he is also far more aware of how treacherous the world was. He has found out that his brother was in a plot to overthrow him -- although, Aethelred had not been able to go through with it. Alfred had decided to forgive him only to fall ill and in his absence, his mother assassinates Aethelred in a misguided attempt to secure Alfred's rule. Alfred has had to deal with his mother's betrayal and leaving him with very few who he knows he can trust truly. However, it's still in his nature to seek out the best in others and trust them.

Nightmares: Alfred's biggest nightmare is being a failure as a king and letting his people down. He also has a history of strange fainting spells that are likely malaria related but not confirmed in canon as they wouldn't really know it. However, he does fear becoming sickly.
